Creating a Family Friendly Kitchen

May 16, 2014

Homeowners in Columbus, Ohio, knew that their kitchen was not the functional family space they wanted.  They had an eat-in kitchen separated from the dining room by the access to basement stairs.  The only way to get to the dining room was to walk back through the kitchen, around a wall and through a hallway. The kitchen had no island, but a peninsula, which housed a range.  The location of the range left little counter space for meal preparation.  A pantry near the back door provided much needed storage space, but the location of the pantry did not flow with the layout of the existing kitchen cabinets.  The homeowners knew it was time to make some design changes.

Senior Designer, Jim Deen of Kitchen Kraft, worked with the homeowners to redesign the kitchen.  “They wanted to create a more open feel to their home.  The current layout made the kitchen feel cramped and cutoff.  They wanted more counter space, storage, updated appliances and an island so their children could do homework while they prepared dinner,” said Deen.

Deen set to work on the couple’s wish list and put together a design, which gave them all of the must-haves.  Deen proposed the kitchen cabinets be wrapped around to the current eat-in kitchen area.  This would give the homeowners enough room to have an island with seating.  He also designed recessing the pantry wall and put in additional cabinets for storage.  Next, the access to the basement was re-configured to create the additional access to the dining area.  Instead of a range, a cook top and wall oven were strategically placed to allow for maximum storage.

With the design done the homeowners decided on a traditional style for their kitchen.  Kabinart cabinets with a Sherwood door style for both the island and the perimeter cabinets were selected.  To make the island stand out a sable stain was selected.  The perimeter cabinets were starlite paint with a coffee finish.  The homeowners chose a countertop in a milano quartz finish.  A stone and glass backsplash helped bring the space together and made the space appear larger.
